Over the past few years the project team has been fortunate to have received support from a variety of sources, but particularly the National Science Foundation’s Innovative Technologies Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) and the Advancing Informal Learning in Science (AISL) programs to support program growth. The NextGen STEMfest project team is grateful to the NSF for funding the festival activities so the youth and alumni can share their work they have been done. The Charles River Collaboratory, a new project of the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation of which Boston College is a partner, will receive a three-year, $150,000 grant from Cummings Foundation to support the engagement of underserved youth and their families with emerging technologies and tools
The high school participants, with support from program alumni and first-generation college student mentors, will then learn how to teach and share the science and computational lessons with middle school students to reinforce STEM career pathways for youth. Institutional partners include the Boston, Springfield, and Waltham Public School
The project, “Empowering Youth in STEM and Technological Careers through AI-enhanced Sustainable and Community-focused Urban Gardening,” builds on three recent NSF awards to the Lynch School totaling nearly $5 million, which have previously supported low-income high school students in similar agricultural technology projects, and the training of environmental science teachers.
Our proposed work is that it includes a deep engagement with the community through both a local community organization and the local school district. This work will establish a firm partnership with CRMII, which aligns well with BC and the Schiller institute’s mission around liberal arts and science and technology education.
